The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides a focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the fundamental role it plays in science, culture and art, education, sustainable development and other fields such as medicine, communications and energy.
This day was first celebrated on 16 May 2015, the anniversary of the first successful laser operation in 1960 by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman. This day is an invitation to strengthen scientific cooperation and harness its potential for sustainable development.
The broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society around the world to participate in activities that demonstrate how science, technology, art and culture can help achieve UNESCO’s goals of education, equality and cooperation to preserve cultural heritage.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DAY:
The main objectives of the International Day of Light are as follows:
– To improve public understanding of how light-based technologies touch the daily lives of us all and are at the heart of the future development of global society, also addressing gender balance issues and focusing in particular on developing countries and emerging economies.
– Strengthen international cooperation by serving as a central information resource for activities coordinated by learned societies, NGOs, government agencies, educational institutions, industry and other partners.
– Emphasise the importance of research in science, the need for investment in light-based technologies to develop new applications, and the global need to promote careers in science and engineering in these fields.
– Raise awareness on technology and design, which can play an important role in achieving greater energy efficiency, in particular by limiting energy waste and reducing light pollution, which is key to dark skies.
